As a single mother, Constance understands the importance and dire need for affordable, accessible and sustainable Child Care or Early Care and Learning. Constance sits on the Joint Council of Child Care and believes the Park Board plays a vital role in providing a nourishing and safe place for all children. Constance has worked diligently with School Board and the City of Vancouver to address the importance of this issue and to support the Community Plan for a Public System of Integrated Early Care and Learning.
Constance is also Liaison to the newly formed LGBTQ Committee and Accessibility and Disability Committee. She also sits on the Service & Budget Committee.
Constance is also a huge supporter of the Arts, and is working to acknowledge the importance of up-cycling, a new and innovative way to utilize previously discarded green waste.
In addition to her work as a Park Commissioner, Constance has worked at the Dr.Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden for over four years and has moved from Operations to the Sales and Marketing Manager. Constance has acknowledged that the Park Board has a product like no other in the world and has devoted many hours working with staff to create a new strategic marketing plan that will benefit the Park Board financially as well as give the Board great opportunities to work closely with the Tourism industry.
Other causes Constance is passionate about are women’s rights, equality for all people, and healthy and fit youth and families.
Constance's father was the late Emery Barnes, one of the first Black politicians elected to the legislative assembly in British Columbia. He was known for his work relating to social justice, human rights and poverty. Constance is a strong voice in continuing his legacy of a "tradition of change and community participation”.
